A relaxing spa stay at Mallory Court hotel Warwickshire

Mallory Court

A stay at Mallory Court

Mallory Court hotel is part of the excellent Eden Hotels Collection, which includes other luxury hotels such as Bovey Castle in Devon, and Brockencote in nearby Worcestershire, as so my expectations were high when I arrived as this hotel and spa.

Mallory Court is one of the nearest hotels to Warwick castle but was built rather more recently, around 100 years ago, and was converted from a family home into a 43-bedroom hotel in 1976.

The Rose Garden promises to be beautiful come spring and summer

As you arrive, the beautiful courtyard leads into a charming classic country house hotel with a succession of lounges and even a tiny sun trap of a bar, a restaurant, library and glass corridor leading to the modern bedrooms.

Mallory Court spa

The spa at Mallory Court is in a separate building to the hotel itself and was totally refurbished not very long ago. It contains a hydrotherapy pool, steam room, saunas, outdoor hot tub, gym, and treatment rooms as well as bedrooms upstairs.

As we’d just come from enjoying a great stay with excellent food at its sister hotel Brockencote Hall in Worcestershire and were about to enjoy another hefty dinner here, it seemed sensible to try and work off a few calories in advance, so I postponed my trip to the hydrotherapy pool and headed for the gym instead. Rather excitingly, I had it all to myself, so I could pretend I was a millionaire working out in my own home.

I had the very modern gym all to myself

All most unlike me, I have to say, and after half an hour ambling about on the treadmill and faffing about with weights, normal service was resumed as I lounged in the outdoor hot tub and wondered which other of the spa facilities at Mallory Court I should visit next: the pool, the steam room or the sauna?

While the spa itself wasn’t on the vast side it certainly packed a lot in, with an outdoor hot tub and sauna, a nail bar, cafe and nice additions such as iced water jugs everywhere and people on hand to serve drinks – champagne glasses very much in evidence here.

The only downside is that staying at the hotel doesn’t automatically mean you can use the pool: you get a complimentary hour if you book a 55-min or longer treatment or are on a spa break, but otherwise you can’t access the spa unless you’re on a family package, in which case you pay £15 per hour for adults or £25 for two hours which is pretty steep in my view. However it’s worth checking out the website for any Mallory Court spa special offers.

The spa treatment rooms are on the second floor of the spa building and on the first floor there are many more bedrooms, done in a similar contemporary style to those in the main house, and perfect for spa lovers who want to be as close to the spa as possible.

I had an excellent deep tissue massage and, fully relaxed after my afternoon in the hotel spa, I headed back to explore the hotel itself.

Mallory Court bedrooms

Our bedroom was actually a suite, with a separate lounge and bedroom and even our own outside space for when the weather was warmer. There was a large bathroom with underfloor heating – which always adds a touch of luxury – and ample supplies of tea and coffee, fruit and little jars of nuts (although the little plastic tubs of milk in the fridge didn’t seem in keeping with the luxury theme).

A big plus point was not only lots of hotel and local information which I love, but a hand-drawn map of the grounds – I love maps and think every country house hotel should have one – so we used that as our guide to explore the grounds before heading off to the spa complex for the afternoon.

Exploring Mallory Court

Country house hotels with spas increasingly common thing as hotels try and work out what guests look for in a luxury hotel, and the beauty of bedrooms at Mallory Court is that they are located in both the main building and the spa building so you can decide how close to the spa you want to be.

Having changed our of our fluffy spa robes and into more suitable attire for dinner, we started off the evening with a glass of Champagne and some stunning canapes in the library (there are tonnes of books and games here if you’re stuck for conversation) and then we headed to the dining room.

Our picture-perfect canapes before dinner were beetroot macarons with salmon mousse, pork croquettes and cheese gourgeres

There were just four tables in for dinner that night and before long we had all struck up a conversation, comparing notes on dishes, and other hotels we’d stayed in, and had a really enjoyable evening chatting to our fellow guests across the room, something which doesn’t often happen in these formal dining environments.

One couple were members of the spa at Mallory Court but decided to treat themselves to dinner and a room for the night on a whim, while another gentlemen was researching venues for a school reunion and was delighted with Mallory Court hotel.

All chatter ceased with the arrival of the various courses which were really excellent. You could mix and match between the seasonal and the market menus (there was also a tasting menu) and so I opted for the Brixham white crab with brown crab emulsion, followed by the salt chamber aged beef fillet with short rib and salsify.

Both were excellent, the beef in particular which was incredibly tasty and the perfect texture, and the rest of the room declared their choices of Cornish brill, South coast hogget (older lamb), roast quail and duck breast to be equally good.

The service was fast and faultless and my only slight niggle would be that the cheese course (billed as a selection of cheese from the trolley) was a pre-selected plate rather than my selection from the trolley, but it was very good anyway, including brie-style Perl Wen from Wales, Colston Basset Stilton and Golden Cross goats milk cheese.

Mallory Court breakfast

I was up early to enjoy breakfast of coffee, lovely thick yoghurt and avocado on toast. (Strangely, many country house classics such as Eggs Benedict and Eggs Florentine weren’t on offer here, although they were available in the spa cafe).

Really thoroughly relaxed after my massage it was time to be on our way home which couldn’t be easier – Mallory Court is one of the closest hotels to the M40, yet there’s no sound of the motorway from the grounds – and yet another great hotel from the Eden Hotels Collection to add to the list.
